Founded in 1996, Copper State Engineering began as a small operation in Scottsdale, Arizona. Nearly three decades later, we have grown into a dedicated team that has built a reputation recognized across the state for delivering accurate data, dependable service, and trusted expertise in geotechnical engineering.

 

We provide comprehensive geotechnical, civil, forensic, environmental, and construction testing services, supporting both residential and commercial developments throughout Arizona. Our team combines technical excellence with practical field insight, helping clients make confident, informed decisions that lead to safe and sustainable construction.

At Copper State Engineering, we take pride in being the firm clients call when they need clarity, reliability, and results. From evaluating complex soil conditions to resolving structural concerns and verifying materials on-site, we approach every project with the same level of attention and professionalism, no matter the size.

Meet The Staff

Mr. Roberts is the owner of Copper State Engineering and its parent company, Team Services. With over 30 years of construction experience, he has led inspection and testing services for a wide range of commercial, residential, and infrastructure projects across the Midwest. He manages the Construction Department and established an ISO 9000 / Guide 17025 compliant quality program, earning A2LA accreditation. Mr. Roberts has also provided special inspections for notable projects such as the EMC Building high-rise in Des Moines, the Downey Printing Building, and the Federal Courthouse in Cedar Rapids.

JEFF ROBERTS

Owner

Mr. Gebregiorgis serves as the President of Copper State Engineering, bringing over 31 years of experience in geotechnical and civil engineering. Throughout his career, he has been recognized for his technical expertise, leadership, and commitment to advancing the engineering field in Arizona. He earned his Master of Science degree from the University of Akron in Ohio in 2003 and has received multiple awards from the American Council of Engineering Companies (ACEC) for his contributions to the profession.

President

Mr. Deatherage is the Senior Engineer at Copper State Engineering and the company’s original founder. With over 46 years of geotechnical engineering experience across the Southwest, he continues to provide expert guidance in foundation design, forensic evaluation, and construction consultation. He earned his Master of Science in Engineering from Arizona State University in 1980 and remains a respected leader in the field for his technical precision and depth of experience.

DAVID DEATHERAGE

Senior Engineer

Mr. Baumgartner serves as a Field and Laboratory Technician and the Radiation Safety Officer at Copper State Engineering. He plays an important role in the company’s testing and quality assurance operations, supporting a wide range of civil, geotechnical, and forensic projects across Arizona. With multiple certifications and licenses, Tyler brings strong technical skill, attention to detail, and a commitment to maintaining the highest standards of safety and accuracy in the field.

TYLER BAUMGARTNER

Field Technician

Mr. Birch is a motivated member of the Copper State Engineering team. He brings valuable experience in cost estimating, material procurement, and field operations, along with a strong understanding of grading, excavation, drainage systems, and roadway construction. Known for his reliability and hands-on approach, Chris helps keep projects running smoothly through effective coordination with trade partners, vendors, and inspectors.

Mr. Geeso joined Copper State Engineering as a Staff Engineer after graduating from Arizona State University in 2025 with a degree in Civil Engineering. Eager to learn and grow in the field, he contributes to a variety of geotechnical and construction projects while developing his technical and analytical skills. Nirari is dedicated to advancing his career and plans to pursue his Professional Engineer (PE) license in the coming years.

As office manager, Sabrina oversees daily operations, administrative functions, and client relations with a focus on efficiency and organization. With her business expertise and passion for growth and improvement, she plays an active role in advancing the company’s innovation, systems, and marketing initiatives. Sabrina earned her bachelor’s degree from Iowa State University and her Master's in business administration from Western Governors University.
